Everyone loves to imagine themselves surrounded by a lush, tropical landscape. You may picture exotic beaches and rainforests with humid climates, but did you know you can also create a tropical landscape around your home? Many tropical plants and shrubs are surprisingly low-maintenance and offer a lot of texture and structure for your landscaping. In this blog, we’ll cover some of the most popular low-maintenance tropical landscape plants and tropical backyard ideas you can incorporate into your own home.

Tropical Plants Ideas

If you’re short on time but still want your landscaping to look stunning, there are many low-maintenance tropical landscaping plants you can add to your home to help you create an outdoor oasis. Keep reading to see our top five plants to add color and drama to your tropical landscape.

  • Liriope – Liriopde plants are super helpful to any gardener or homeowner as they are hardy, cheap, and come in various colours and sizes. Liriope is a versatile plant that is great for creating borders, green walls, or mass planting.
  • Ixora – Keep the Ixora out of frosty weather; it will require very little care afterwards. The Ixora creates stunning red, orange, yellow, and pink flowers that can grow very tall. You can grow this tropical plant as a shrub or a container in full sunlight for a burst of color in your tropical landscape.
  • Grass Tree – Native to Australia, the Grass Tree is a hardy bush plant known for its charcoal trunk and flower spike. These plants can range from ground level to six and a half feet in height and grow best in soil with good drainage. Once established, a Grass Tree can live up to a hundred years old—the perfect low-maintenance tropical landscaping plant.
  • Cordyline Fruticosa – Sometimes known as a Palm Lily, Good Luck Plant, or Cabbage Plant, the Cordyline Fruticosa colorful leaves will jazz up any space. They also can thrive in spaces with low light or full sun exposure, which is perfect for property owners who don’t have too much time to spend gardening.
  • Giant Bromeliad – For a showstopping tropical landscape plant idea, look no further than the Giant Bromeliad. Giant Bromeliads can grow in pots or beds if they have enough space to grow outwards with their large foliage. They don’t like “wet feet”, so try not to overwater the base of the plant.

Florida Landscape Ideas

Low-maintenance tropical landscaping is much more achievable than you may realize. Tropical plants in and around your home can help draw focus to parts of your home you want to highlight or remove attention from spots you may not want to show off. Tropical plants not only add a pop of color to your garden but can attract butterflies, bees, or hummingbirds to your home.
