Manuka honey is a type of honey native to New Zealand and Australia. It boasts antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, as well as vitamins and minerals like zinc, potassium, iron, calcium, and vitamin B6. When selecting a manuka honey, look for information about methylglyoxal (MGO) and non-peroxide activity (NPA). MGO is a key indicator of activity strength in manuka honey—it’s a bioactive chemical that directly relates to the antibacterial activity in the honey and is measured in parts per million. NPA correlates to the strength of non-peroxide activity, or honey showing strong antibacterial activity, within the honey.
