You are watching: How to make a Minecraft Potion of Night Vision
You can make many potions in Minecraft, but you can also go through your entire survival world without using any. However, if you’re planning on visiting The Warden in Minecraft’s Deep Dark Ancient Cities, there’s one that’s definitely going to make your adventure easier – the Potion of Night Vision.
When exploring the Deep Dark, the aptly-named biome is just that – dark. Especially the loot-filled home of The Warden, Ancient Cities. Given how large Ancient Cities are, placing torches as you go won’t even make the biggest difference, and you’ll find that the best way to be able to safely explore the structure will be by drinking a Night Vision Potion. To do that, it might be helpful to first know how to brew Minecraft’s Potion of Night Vision.
The Potion of Night Vision in Minecraft improves visibility when in dark areas. So, when exploring the huge caves and Ancient Cities of the Deep Dark biome, drinking a potion of Night Vision will make it look like day, without having to place torches in every nook and cranny. You’ll still be affected by the Darkness effect that hits when The Warden emerges, but this only lasts a few seconds, and you’ll still have better short-range visibility.

To brew a potion of Night Vision, like any potion, you will first need an Awkward Potion. To make this, put a water bottle, fuel (Blaze Powder) and Nether Wart into a Brewing Stand. Once you have brewed the Awkward Potion, you can leave it in the Brewing Stand, and add a Golden Carrot into the ingredient slot. Once it has finished brewing, you’ll have a three-minute Night Vision Potion.
If you want to make the most of your ingredients, use three water bottles, and the three resultant Awkward Potions, as just one ingredient can be used to make up to three potions at a time.
If you want to make your Minecraft Potion last longer – which we recommend, time flies when you’re having fun – place them back in the Brewing Stand and add Redstone powder to the ingredient slot. You might also need to add more Blaze Powder for fuel if you’ve run out. Once brewing is complete, your three-minute Potions will now last eight minutes.
You can also turn your Night Vision Potion into a Splash Potion. This probably isn’t hugely necessary for Night Vision, but could come in handy if you’re trying to run away from The Warden in a hurry. The only difference with a Splash Potion is that, instead of standing still and drinking it, you can simply throw it on the ground at your feet.
You can turn either three-minute or eight-minute potions into Splash Potions of the same duration by brewing them again, this time with gunpowder in the ingredient slot. Again, you will use up more fuel.

Finally, to make this a complete guide, we’ll show you how to make a Lingering Potion. However, this doesn’t really have a huge benefit with Night Vision, will decrease the duration of your potion, and requires a rare ingredient. so we wouldn’t recommend it.
A Lingering Potion, like a Splash Potion, can be thrown on the ground to activate it. Rather than being instantly used, the potion will linger on the ground for a few seconds, visible by particles emanating from the floor. This means players (and mobs) can walk through it as it lingers. Really, though, this is most useful for Healing Potion. Alternatively, a Lingering Potion can be used in the crafting recipe for a Tipped Arrow, meaning you can shoot friends or mobs with an arrow of Night Vision to give them the effects of the potion.
If you still want to know how to make a Minecraft Lingering Potion of Night Vision, pop your Night Vision Potion back in the Brewing stand, and add Dragon’s Breath, an ingredient only obtainable during battle with the Ender Dragon.
So, there you have it. Once you have your potion in your inventory (or two or three), simply drink up, and you’ll have nothing to worry about as you search your nearest Ancient City for Echo Shards and Music Disks. Oh, except for the deadly Warden, but we’re sure you’ll be fine…
