Nothing can light up your day like a crispy snack. There is something special about salty, crunchy onion rings that simply brings a smile and instantly clears any blue thoughts.

These golden, round onion rings are an easy treat starring an eggless batter. After a hot and quick stovetop jacuzzi, they are seasoned with salt and served hot with favorite sauce on the side.

Onion rings are something we can see at any bar or restaurant and are usually served as a companion with beer and as a side dish for burgers and even chicken wings.

Which onions should you use for onion rings?

When it comes to onions, you can choose among different varieties. Make sure they are larger ones as it will be easier to coat the onion rings with the batter and also to separate each ring.

Here are 3 types of onions you can choose from:

  • Vidalia onions: These are a really great option since they have a nice and sweet flavor rather than being pungent and strong. Vidalia onions are perhaps the most popular choice for onion rings. Vidalia onions are a type of yellow onion, so any type of yellow onion will work well.
  • Maui onions: These are very sweet and do not have that potent and strong taste that tends to turn people away from onions. Maui onions are a smaller type of onion, but they have a perfectly round shape, which makes them perfect for onion rings.
  • White onions: If you like less sweetness but don’t want an overly pungent flavor, then the white onion is for you. You can use any variety of white onion as they are all quite similar.

Which onions should I avoid?

Here are some varieties that are not a good option for the onion rings.

Red onion varieties will not be good choice, as the onion rings may stay a bit raw and firm.

Green onions and shallots are also not a smart thing to choose as they will not give the desired results.

Leeks, from the family of the onions, should be prepared in all the other ways, except as onion rings.

How do you make onion rings?

Every good meal starts with a careful ingredients choice. Choose your onions wisely. Once you have your onion, peel it and cut into thick rings.

Now, don’t go wild, but the onion rings must be thick as they may break if they’re too thin.

Some people like to soak the onion rings in milk in order to extract the onion scent. If you want to include this step, just place the onion rings in a bowl and cover with milk. Let them stand for 10 minutes before draining.

Coat the onion rings with flour or starch and place aside.

As these are eggless onion rings, you will create a tempura batter. You will combine the rest of the flour with milk, baking powder, and garlic powder.

Once you have the tempura ready, you can dip the onion rings in it. After dipping the onion rings in a batter, you will coat them with breadcrumbs. You can choose plain breadcrumbs or panko breadcrumbs.

Fry the onion rings in a fryer, an air-fryer, or skillet filled with oil.

Once they are golden brown, remove the onion rings from the oil and sprinkle with salt. Serve with desired sauce on the side.

What is the best way to serve onion rings?

You can serve your onion rings as a snack, an appetizer, or a side dish.

Onion rings pair great with burgers but are also a great addition to salads. Just chop the onion rings and toss in the salad as a crunchy edition.

Speaking about sauces, the onion rings can be served with ketchup, paprika relish, Sriracha, cocktail sauce, and even sour cream-based sauces. It is all up to your personal preference.

The onion rings will be a nice addition at any table setting, and as these are made without eggs, even vegans will be able to enjoy these!
