Thinking of hosting your own outdoor Easter scavenger hunt for the family?
If you’re at a total loss for where to start, I have all the practical tips for having an Easter weekend full of fun and happy memories.
Easter is one of the most popular celebrations in the US and around the world!
Almost 80% of American people celebrate the event (irrelevant of whether or not they believe in the holiday’s religious origins).
And, of course, it’s an excellent time for families and friends to come together and share one another’s company.
Kids of all ages look forward to Easter morning which brings Easter baskets full of chocolate eggs and jelly beans.
However, one of the biggest challenges that many families face regarding the Easter celebrations is creating a fun and effective outdoor Easter scavenger hunt.
Even before considering the potential ramifications of the weather turning to a sudden spring shower, there are plenty of challenges associated with creating an Easter egg scavenger hunt outside.
Still, with a little thought and care, you can make the most of your scavenger hunt preparations every year.
And ensure it’s an event the whole family will love!
An outdoor scavenger hunt is a fun tradition that keeps kids entertained on Easter Sunday.
However, organizing a fun outdoor Easter scavenger hunt can seem like a mammoth undertaking!
Especially if you’re hosting Easter for family and friends and have kids of different age group.
But it shouldn’t necessarily have to be this way (if you ask me)!
That’s why I’m sharing some practical tips and ideas to help, including super fun riddle clues.
While little kids can run around looking for hidden no-plastic eggs with small prizes, you want to have a more serious challenge waiting for older kids (ages 5+) to receive their grand prize.
Believe me, you’ll feel like the hostess of the year watching them having the time of their life solving these riddle clues.
But more on that later in the article!
Let’s start with the basics first.
When thinking about organizing a fun outdoor Easter scavenger hunt, the first thing you should consider is simple: who are you planning for?
Organizing a fun Easter egg hunt outside is often easier when you’ve just got one or two guests to plan for.
Still, if you’re planning a big event, you’ll want to be sure you’ve got plenty of outdoor space.
Add a fun spin to your backyard with some cute Easter decorations and plan to make delicious and healthy Easter treats for everyone.
If you’re hosting a big event, don’t forget to cater to children’s families too to make it a family-friendly gathering.
For example, teas and coffees will often be well-received if the weather’s a little milder.
At this point, also think about the target age range of your scavenger hunt guests.
With large groups of kids ranging from toddlers to teenagers, divide the kids up and have two separate egg hunts.
Young kids will enjoy a traditional Easter egg hunt with small colorful eggs hidden throughout the backyard.

But please please please consider purchasing paper eggs instead of the traditional plastic Easter eggs.
My heart bleeds thinking of how much plastic is used every Easter and then goes straight to the landfill.
These paper Easter eggs are such a great alternative to plastic ones. They are cheap and of a good size.
Plus, decorating them can be another fun activity to do with your kids this Easter season.
Use these 15 cute ideas as inspiration on how to decorate Easter eggs!
And while at it consider dyeing real eggs with onion skins to get a rich burgundy color the natural way. Plus, you can eat the eggs when dyed with this method so no eggs will go to waste.
Decorate the paper eggs with different colors several days before the hunt.
Then hide a small toy in each egg.
Again, try to avoid useless plastic toys that’ll add to clutter, overwhelm parents and go straight to the garbage after one use.
Instead, you can hide little chocolate bunnies in the eggs or other meaningful gifts like printable Bible verse cards for kids that are perfect for Easter.
If you feel crafty and want to spend some meaningful time with your little ones, consider DIY-ing a super cute Easter basket for toddlers. Don’t worry I have all the instructions with step-by-step pictures for you in the article.
So all the preparations are done and the big day is finally here!
For younger kids, simply ensure the Easter eggs you use in your scavenger hunt outside are less well-hidden, so toddlers don’t get frustrated.
Now, for older children aged 5+, you’ll need a different type of scavenger hunt.
Add a fun twist to the traditional outdoor egg hunt with an exciting set of clues.
This is a great way to have older kids receive well-deserved prizes after a super fun Easter game.
Solving Easter riddle clues – whether it’s just for one kid or a group – will get them thinking and feeling more challenged.
You’ll need to hide clues in different locations of your outdoor area one after another.
At the end of the hunt, each child receives a bigger prize.
An Easter-themed book is always a great gift.
If the kids in your group are of different ages, you can choose different books that are more age-appropriate.
These printable Bible verse cards for kids are also a great gift for older kids.
These come as printable pdf files. Print as many as you need on cardstock paper, and tie them together with a ribbon.
Voila, you have a great gift ready.
Teenagers would get really excited to receive $10 or $20 cash bills as their final prize or a gift card to their favorite store.
You can then organize a storytime at the end of the scavenger hunt and read aloud one of the books to the kids.
Or take this time to talk about the Easter story by reading Easter Bible verses for kids.
Even if you’re not religious it’s important for your kids to know why Easter is celebrated by Christians around the world.
These printable Easter story cards are a fun way to talk about the events of the Holy Week, starting from Palm Sunday and ending with Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday.
So this can be an informative session where kids – and why not adults too – will learn something new.

These Easter riddles clue cards will help you with setting up a super fun Easter treasure hunt with clues.
The first step is to choose the clues you want to use (you don’t have to use them all) and place them in the hiding spots.
Prepare fun prizes.
Where the final egg clue leads is the place you hide the prize or treasure.
So basically kids start the treasure hunt with the first card.
Give the card with the first clue to them and explain how the clues work. The first card will lead them to their favorite shoe, where they find the second clue. They solve the riddle to know where to look for the next clue and so on.
You can either write clues on pieces of paper or DIY pretty cards with the written clues on them.
Alternatively, you can purchase the pack of already prettily-designed cards from my shop (see below). All you’ll need to do is print them out at home or a print shop, preferably on card stock paper.
As a bonus, you’ll get 6 additional clues with your purchase.

And voila! The hardest part is done!
Consider the following tips and ideas to help make the event enjoyable for everyone involved:
Spring showers aren’t necessarily the easiest to manage.
With this in mind, when planning your outdoor Easter egg scavenger hunt, consider the weather and be prepared for the worst, just in case.
If the weather should take a turn, you don’t necessarily need to cancel the event. Always ensure that the eggs are hidden somewhere that’s drier. Ideally in a plastic box or bag, to keep them safe!
And these cute spring letter board quotes would be a great addition to the overall Easter fun!
As well as the main Easter egg hunt itself, you can also incorporate excellent outdoor Easter scavenger hunt games to make the event more exciting!
For younger kids who can’t solve riddles and clues, you can do an easy-to-follow “treasure map” instead.
What’s more, you could also consider adding party games to make it more exciting for children.
Such as musical statues, pin the tail on the donkey, an egg-and-spoon race, and sack races.
You can never go wrong with a fun bingo game! Organize one with these free printable bingo cards.
Pass the parcel is also a great contender for an excellent outdoor Easter scavenger hunt since it can allow the children participating the chance to play for a prize!
However, it’s generally best to avoid including actual chocolate prizes in pass-the-parcel games, as these can easily melt when passed around between the children and their warm hands.
The Easter season is very nearly upon us!
And with this in mind, now might be the ideal time to begin thinking about your own Easter scavenger hunt ideas and inspirations.
So, hop to it! The Easter bunny isn’t going to wait!
And with today’s fun ideas, you’ll hopefully be able to create an excellent Easter egg scavenger hunt outside that all the participants will love.
