Garden Lights without Electricity and Wiring

If you’re looking for fuss-free lighting for your outdoor space, garden lights that don’t require electricity or wiring are an ideal solution.

It might be the case that you don’t have access to electricity in your yard or perhaps you don’t want to spend too much money on wiring mains-powered outdoor lights.

There are 2 garden lighting types that don’t require electricity or wiring: solar-powered lights and battery-operated lights.

Both types have pros and cons so we will look into each alternative to help you choose which garden lights are best for you!

Garden Lights without Electricity

Installing a new electric system to power garden lights can be lengthy and expensive. You will usually need to hire an electrician to install and wire outdoor lights that connect to your mains’ power.

Plus, you need to take into consideration the wattage of your outdoor lights to ensure you don’t spend too much electricity with lights that consume a lot of energy.

All these hurdles can make plug-in lights an expensive investment with little reward. So, what is the alternative?

If you want to save time and money on installing mains-power lights, your best option is to invest in garden lights that don’t require electricity.

Both solar lights and battery lights don’t need electricity to work so you can use a combination of these lights.

Our lighting specialist, William O’Brien, recommends solar-powered garden lights as a viable alternative to traditional electric lights.

He adds “these lights don’t require electricity and they’re ideal if you live in an area with enough sun all year round”. Places like Florida, California, and Texas are great locations to install solar lights.

If you live in a cold state, such as Montana, New York, or Washington, your best bet is battery-operated lights. These lights need more maintenance when it comes to replacing batteries, however, they are a great option if you’re on a budget.

Garden Lights without Wiring

Wiring a brand-new outdoor lighting system is complicated, especially if you require the installation of path lights.

In most cases, you need 1.5mm² three-core steel-wire-armored cables (SWA), which require professional installation. Plus, the outdoor lights should be weatherproof and RCD-protected for your safety.

This process can be daunting and therefore you might be looking for outdoor lights without wiring.

One of the most popular garden lights that do not require wiring or drilling is solar-powered pathway lights. These lights are easy to install, eco-friendly, and able to run at no cost to you.

The best solar pathway lights have an IP65 rating (weatherproof), as well as a high number of lumens. The number of lumens tells you how bright your garden lights are. As a rule of thumb, the higher the amount of lumens, the brighter the light is.

Solar Lights vs Battery-Operated Lights

Both solar lights and battery lights are great alternatives for mains-power lights, but which one is best for you?

Below you can find the pros and cons of each lighting type so that you can choose the most suitable option for your outdoor space.

Solar-Powered Garden Lights

Solar lights are one of the most popular outdoor lighting solutions nowadays. These lights are becoming more and more affordable, which means it is now easier to use this alternative for residential uses.

Pros

  • Eco-friendly solution
  • Great long-term investment
  • Low maintenance required

Cons

  • Not suitable if you live in an area that doesn’t get enough sunlight
  • High-quality solar lights can be pricey

Battery-Operated Lights

Battery-operated lights are easy to install and maintain, however, they’re not a sustainable solution. You can easily find battery-operated outdoor lights with a wide variety of designs, shapes, and colors.

Pros

  • Easy to install, with no drilling required
  • Cheap alternative
  • A great variety of lighting designs, shapes, and colors are available

Cons

  • Not environmentally-friendly
  • Batteries need to be replaced regularly
  • The lighting output is low
