Outdoor TV vs. Indoor TV: Which Should You Buy for Your Backyard?

Warm weather is right around the corner, and you’re looking forward to spending more time in your backyard this spring and summer, but you know what your space is missing? An outdoor TV viewing area! Once you start planning your space, the first (and possibly most important) decision you must make is: what TV should I add?

Decision number one: Do you want an outdoor or an indoor TV?

Outdoor Vs. Indoor: What are the main differences?

While an outdoor tv and an indoor TV may look similar at first glance, some key differences between the two make them uniquely suited to their environments!

Weather Resistance

The most obvious difference between an outdoor and indoor TV is weather resistance. Outdoor TVs are designed to withstand exposure to the elements, including rain, humidity, and extreme temperatures. They typically have a higher resistance level than indoor TVs, with features like sealed cabinets, weatherproof cables, and tempered glass screens.

Indoor TVs, on the other hand, are not designed to be exposed to the elements. While they may have some moisture resistance, they are not built to withstand rain or extreme temperature changes. If you try to use an indoor TV outside, it will likely not last very long.

Brightness & Glare Reduction

Another key difference between indoor and outdoor TVs is the level of brightness and glare reduction. Outdoor TVs are designed to be viewed in bright sunlight, which means they need to be brighter than indoor TVs. They also have special anti-glare coatings on their screens to reduce reflections and improve visibility in bright outdoor environments.

Indoor TVs, on the other hand, do not need to be as bright and do not typically have anti-glare coatings. This can make them difficult to see in bright sunlight or rooms with many windows, making them not an ideal outdoor viewing option.

Audio Quality

Outdoor TVs are often used in settings (think backyard BBQ or pool party) where sound quality is just as important as picture quality! As a result, they typically have higher-quality built-in speakers and may also have additional audio output options for connecting to an external sound system.

Indoor TVs may have decent built-in speakers but are not typically designed for high-quality audio. If you want to enjoy the best possible sound quality outdoors, it’s almost a necessity to connect your indoor TV to a separate sound system.

What to consider when choosing an outdoor TV?

Now that you’re convinced that you need an outdoor television for your backyard, there are several other factors that you need to consider before making a purchase! The obvious ones are making sure you find a weather-resistant TV that is appropriately bright and has the correct audio quality for your space – but what else?

Screen Size

The screen size of your outdoor tv is also an important consideration. Choose a size appropriate for your outdoor space and viewing distance. A TV that is too small will be difficult to see from a distance, while a TV that is too large may be overwhelming in a small outdoor space. Generally, a screen size of 55 to 65 inches is ideal for most outdoor settings.

Connectivity

When choosing an outdoor TV, ensure it has the necessary connectivity options. Look for TVs with HDMI ports, USB ports, and built-in Wi-Fi, allowing you to easily connect to streaming services, gaming consoles, and other devices – anything you need for your family or gatherings! (Note: If you don’t go for built-in Wi-Fi, ensuring your home’s Wi-Fi will reach your outdoor space will be essential.)

Price

It’s important to consider your budget when choosing an outdoor TV. Outdoor TVs are typically more expensive than indoor TVs due to their specialized design and weather-resistant feature – but that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank to find a TV that will work for you! We are always here and ready to discuss different price point options to get you a TV that fits your space and budget.

What else do you need for your outdoor tv space?

So, you’ve chosen your TV, and now you’re ready to complete the outdoor TV viewing space of your dreams.

  • Patio furniture: When choosing outdoor furniture, you will want to steer towards comfortable seating made with durable materials (teak, aluminum, or weather-resistant wicker). Make sure any cushions you choose will stand up against the elements and can be washed easily!
  • TV Mount: Look for a mount that is compatible with your TV and can withstand the TV’s weight in outdoor conditions. Chances are you’ll want to look for one that can attach to a wall or ceiling space.
  • Streaming Device or Outdoor Antenna: If you want to stream movies or watch local broadcast TV channels, you will need devices to do so! You’ll want to find an outdoor antenna to pick up channels in your area, a streaming device (such as an Amazon Fire Stick, Roku, or Chromecast), or both!
  • Sound System: To enhance your viewing experience, consider investing in a sound system that can withstand outdoor conditions. Look for a system with weather-resistant speakers and a subwoofer that can deliver high-quality sound.
  • Surge Protector: Finally, protecting your electronics from power surges and voltage spikes is vital. Invest in a surge protectors designed for outdoor use that can handle your TV’s and other electronics’ power demands.
