How Far Can a Blink Camera be Away from the Sync Module?

When setting up a smart security system, the last thing you want is to finish placing everything and find out that your devices are out of range.

Blink cameras have an average signal range of 100 feet from the Sync Module. However, there are several factors that can affect this range.

What Happens if My Blink Camera is Out Of Range?

Blink Cameras depend on a Wi-Fi signal to communicate with your smartphone and alert you to events around your home.

Your Sync Module transmits information from your Wi-Fi router to your Blink Camera. If you place your camera too far from your Sync Module, it may:

  • Function improperly
  • Fail to alert you to motion detection
  • Go offline completely

As the mediator between the wireless router and your Blink Camera, the Sync Module is an essential component of your Blink system.

If your Blink Camera is further from the Sync Module than the approximate 100-foot range, it might completely disconnect and go offline. In this case, it’ll usually say “System Unavailable” or show a spinning loading icon.

To test this, I did take one of my Blink cameras about 100 ft from the sync module, and the result was the screenshot you are seeing above.

Even if your Blink Camera does not completely lose its connection with your Sync Module and Wi-Fi network, a consistent disruption is equally as inconvenient.

For your Blink camera to function properly, it must be within range of your Sync Module and free of interference from other devices.

Tips to Improve Your Sync Module’s Wi-Fi Signal

When installing your Blink camera, it is important to take note of factors that may affect your camera’s ability to connect with the Sync Module.

To improve the connection between your Sync Module and Blink Camera:

  • Install your Sync Module in a central location
  • Be aware of interference from other devices
  • Improve your internet connection

Install Your Sync Module in a Central Location

Putting your Sync Module behind dense building materials, like concrete or brick, can interfere with its signal strength.

Like any other device, installing your Sync Module behind a thick wall, or with multiple walls between it and the camera, can lead to a bad connection.

For best results, install your Sync Module in a central location between your camera and your Wi-Fi router.

Be Aware of Interference from Other Devices

Devices like baby monitors, radios, and microwaves can interfere with your Sync Module’s connection. Avoid placing it and the camera close to anything that sends electromagnetic waves.

Other devices that connect to your wireless network can also interfere with the connection between your Blink Camera and Sync Module.

Blink Cameras run on a 2.4 GHz frequency. If you have a dual-band router, consider switching other devices to the 5 GHz frequency to free up some broadband.

Improve Your Internet Connection

Blink Cameras need a strong internet connection to connect to a Sync Module. Improving your signal strength can help your Blink System function much better.

  • Avoid using a Virtual Private Network. VPNs can cause an interruption in connectivity. Turn your VPN off before connecting your camera and Sync Module to your Wi-Fi network.
  • Purchase a Wi-Fi range extender. These devices boost your Wi-Fi signal and extend the range of your Blink Cameras. This is an ideal solution if you have a lot of space to cover.
  • Invest in a new router. Some routers work better than others. Consider researching other router manufacturers and purchasing one that provides the signal strength you need.

With most devices, the easiest way to improve your connection is to connect an ethernet cable. At this time, however, Blink products cannot connect to ethernet cables.

How to Check Your Blink Signal Strength

After installing your Blink Camera and Sync Module, it’s a good idea to check the signal strength for both devices to ensure everything is working well.

Checking your Blink signal strength is easy, and it will ensure you have the best connection possible for features such as:

  • Live View
  • App notifications
  • Motion clips
  • Two-way audio

How to Check Your Sync Module’s Signal Strength

To check your signal strength for the Sync Module using the Blink App, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Blink App.
  2. Select your Sync Module.
  3. Check your Wi-Fi signal strength.

If you have less than three bars, try moving your Sync Module closer to your router.

How to Check Your Blink Camera’s Signal Strength

To check the signal strength for individual Blink cameras, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Blink app.
  2. Select the camera you want to check and tap Device Settings.
  3. Tap “General Settings.”
  4. Select “Connection to Wi-Fi.”

If you have less than three bars of Wi-Fi, try taking some steps to improve your wireless signal.
