Our top recommendation is the Windex Glass & Window Spray. It’s a popular classic that cleans stains and dirt without leaving residue, from a trusted brand that’s been around for generations. If you’re looking for a glass cleaner for your hanging mirrors, we suggest the Sprayway Glass Cleaner. It’s a foam cleaner that won’t drip on the floor while you clean.
Spray cleaners are the most common (and most popular) types of glass cleaner you’ll find on the market. However, there are other options to choose from, such as pre-moistened wipes that come already soaked in a cleaning solution and aerosol foam glass cleaners.

“Some glass cleaners are made specifically for certain types of glass, like car windows or tinted windows,” Brown says. We recommend reading the label to check out the intended use. If you want to use a glass cleaner on an unconventional surface, such as a cooktop, perform a spot test if you’re not sure whether they are compatible.
“The most effective way to use a glass cleaner is to spray it directly on the glass or on a soft cloth,” Brown says. “Wipe the glass in a zigzag motion until it’s clean and dry. The reason we don’t use a circular motion is that you end up taking a dirty cloth over an area you just cleaned. The zigzag pattern of starting at the top of the glass and working your way down prevents that.”
We highly recommend using a microfiber cloth to wipe away your cleaner in order to cut down on potential streaks.

“Choosing a glass cleaner with a scent is a personal preference, as many people have chemical sensitivities that can trigger allergic reactions,” says Brown. “Common scents you might find are citrus, lavender, or fresh scents like ocean breeze.”
Some glass cleaners contain ammonia which tends to produce a stronger, more overpowering smell. If that’s something you’re sensitive to, several of the best glass cleaners are ammonia-free.
For streak-free glass, your best bet is to use a microfiber cloth with your preferred glass cleaner. The fabric is super absorbent and, unlike paper towels, these cloths can be washed and reused. “If you are cleaning dusty glass, a damp microfiber cloth will work just fine to remove the dust,” Brown says. “You can also use a low-pile microfiber drying glass cloth to dry the mirror for a streak-free shine.”
The type of glass cleaner you opt for also depends on the intended use. “If you are cleaning picture frames with film on the glass, a commercial aerosol spray like Sprayway glass cleaner is my favorite because it comes out as a foam and won’t drip down the glass and into the frame, which can then damage the photos,” says Brown.
Glass cleaners are versatile and can be used on all types of glass including car windows, windshields, cabinets, windows, mirrors, and faces of tablets or smartphones. You can also use them to clean non-glass surfaces such as stainless steel fixtures, appliances floors, and stovetops.

“Because many glass surfaces are connected to other materials, such as wood or plastic (for example, a wooden cabinet or table with a glass pane), it’s important to use a glass cleaner that is safe on both the glass and connecting surface,” Brown says. “When in doubt, use a pH-neutral glass cleaner that will be safe on most surfaces, and dry the glass with a cloth that won’t leave streaking or lint behind.”
If you’re looking for a natural solution to clean glass surfaces, vinegar is a great alternative to commercial glass cleaners. Not only is it cheap and free from chemicals, but it is also excellent at removing dirt, grime, and streaks from all types of glass. “It is a great choice for shower glass doors where there may be shampoo or soap residue from a shower,” Brown says.
“Vinegar can help dissolve stubborn stains and make your exterior windows shiny and clear,” Brown adds. “To use vinegar for cleaning exterior windows, you can mix 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture onto the glass. Wipe it clean with a glass cloth or squeegee.” You can also add vinegar to a commercial glass cleaner such as Windex for increased cleaning power.
Figure out a cleaning routine that works for you and your lifestyle. The types of glass surfaces in your home will dictate your needs. Marilee Nelson, co-founder of Branch Basics, says, “There is no specific rule when it comes to cleaning windows, mirrors, or screens. A good rule of thumb to follow is whenever you notice fingerprints or marks, give it a wipe down to prevent the area from needing a deep clean down the line.” Parents will agree with Wojenski’s sentiments: “A home with little children will likely see fingerprints on windows and glass doors much faster, requiring more frequent cleaning.”
Err on the side of caution and avoid glass cleaner on a television or other electronic item’s screen. This doesn’t mean it needs to stay dirty. Wojenski shares why not and how to clean screens, “The type of glass used on electronic screens is not the same as what is used for windows or mirrors, and they need to be cleaned accordingly. Using a microfiber cloth to wipe the screen clean and wipe away dust is typically all that is needed. If a little more cleaning power is needed, the cloth can be dampened.” You’ll want to use the best glass cleaners gently to ensure you do not damage sensitive and expensive screens.
