11 of the best outdoor showers at hotels around the world

For all the luxe amenities that a hotel can toss at you, few can hold a candle to the all-out corporeal bliss of bathing under the stars or sunshine totally in the buff.

Outdoor showers may be few and far between at most hotels and resorts – but the ones that do offer them usually do their best to bring an experience to remember, often complete with natural materials to pad barefoot across to your private (yet open to the elements) deluge, complete with silky ocean breezes and the sounds of nature all around.

Read on for just a sampling of some of the best outdoors showers at hotels and resorts everywhere from Arizona and Africa to the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean. And please, by all means, tell us which ones we missed.

Castle Hot Springs

Roughly an hour’s drive north of Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport (PHX) brings you to an all-inclusive wellness oasis in the Bradshaw Mountains at the 210-acre Castle Hot Springs, where things like yoga, horseback riding, farm-to-table meals and all-you-can-soak sessions in the onsite mineral-imbued hot springs get wrapped into your room rate.

The adults-only (16 years old and up) resort just opened a spectacular new via ferrata Alps-like adventure climbing trail on property for fall 2021 – the first in Arizona.

After a romp on it high above the Sonoran Desert, you might want to soak your weary bones in the privacy of your outdoor soaking tub or shower at one of the property’s luxurious bungalows or cottages. Some even have a special faucet that delivers water directly from the hot springs to the basin. And on a new moon night, under Arizona’s inky skies in these parts, there are few experiences more transporting than bathing under the stars to the sounds of the nearby creek babbling down from the hot springs or the wind through the date palms.

Origins Lodge

Wake up and shower outside to the most jungle-like of soundtracks as howler monkeys bellow their good mornings at this pristine eco resort on 111 acres of rainforest in the high valley jungles of northern Costa Rica.

Origins Lodge is a collection of seven private accommodations that overlook the surrounding volcanoes and Nicaragua Lake. Each individual lodge has a private fire-heated soaking tub on the terrace and a spacious outdoor rain shower with jungle canopy views overhead.

Waterfall hikes, horseback riding, tubing and white water rafting are among the adventure activities you can get up to during your days here. And the property also holds the distinction of being the only one in Costa Rica that’s overseen by a Michelin-starred chef, so you’re sure to have adventures in dining here, too.

Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico

This beachfront hotel fronting a golden spit of sand less than an hour east of Old San Juan, in the municipality of Rio Grande, puts the pleasure in a private Puerto Rican vacation.

The newly renovated Regency Suites at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico, near El Yunque National Rain Forest, are actually entire private villas — each complete with an outdoor shower, plunge pool and an alfresco dining space just a few steps from the beach.

Fringed by palms and other tropical trees, the outdoor showers are made of natural stone and surrounded by tall walls for maximum privacy.

Naladhu Private Island Maldives

For most visitors who make it to one of the many private islands of the Maldives, the mission is usually to spend as much time as possible out of doors, in as little clothing as possible and enjoying the ocean views and silky sea breezes. Head to South Male Atoll, and this pure escapist tropical resort on a private island can help you achieve those noble goals.

The waterfront Ocean House at Naladhu Private Island Maldives comes with its own infinity pool, private beach cabana and the most blissed-out outdoor shower imaginable that you reach directly from the primary suite’s bathroom via a series of stepping stones surrounded by reflecting pools and lush tropical foliage. No robe required, needless to say.

Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts

Have you really been to Bora Bora if you haven’t bared it all in the name of bathing outside while staying in a villa with views of one of the world’s dreamiest lagoons?

The Royal Beach Villa at Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts has views of the destination’s most iconic peak – a screen saver darling if ever there was one, Mount Otemanu. And you can soak in the views from the private pool, too.

When its time to shower off the day’s fun, do it surrounded by flowering tropical plants in a simple, stone outdoor shower where the main attraction is the open sky overhead and the verdant views all around.

Lovango Resort + Beach Club

Opening Dec. 15, 2022, Lovango Resort + Beach Club is the first new-build hotel to open in the U.S. Virgin Islands in more than 30 years. On a private island off the coast of St. John, overlooking Caneel Bay, the location sure looks to be a stunner – with an oceanfront infinity pool, several beach clubs and snorkeling along coral reefs at your doorstep.

A back-to-nature retreat, the property’s accommodations include a three-bedroom villa, luxury tree houses and six glamping tents – all of which have outdoors showers and patios.

For the best bird’s eye of views of the islands while you scrubadubdub, opt to stay in one of the tree houses.

Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda

Washed by salty sea breezes, the Dominican Republic is one of those tropical locales that naturally beckons you to bathe in your birthday suit with the wind ruffling your hair.

And Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda on the island’s northeast coast gives you just the spot to do so within its 18 oceanfront suites that blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living in a way that will make you never want to use climate control again.

When you’re not swimming in the shallow, warm waters on the beach just out front or enjoying your suite’s private pool and the all-inclusive resort’s four restaurants and five bars, you can always get swept away by the warm ocean breezes in your suite’s outdoor shower.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba

Recently having emerged from a $50 million expansion that unveiled 34 private beachfront pool suites, Banyan Tree Mayakoba is one of the standard-setting luxury resorts along the Riviera Maya that draws a steady flow of return guests.

The new suites are the epitome of eco-chic, pairing local natural materials like the limestone-based stucco called chukum and tropical woods with unique works by Mexican artists to lend a real sense of place.

The suites each have a private solarium with their own heated pools in addition to a mighty fine outdoor shower and soaking tub on a secluded terrace, too – all to help you navigate finding your personal bliss.

Zemi Beach House

Known for its top-notch food scene, the British Overseas Territory of Anguilla is a favorite with the international jet set. Leonardo DiCaprio and Paul McCartney are among the celebrities who’ve escaped here for a spell. And we’re wondering if they had the singular pleasure of an outdoor shower somewhere divine on the island.

On Shoal Bay Beach, Zemi Beach House proffers up one of the island’s best options for bathing in the elements at its two and three-bedroom oceanfront suites, all of which have private outdoor showers with nearly 180-degree views of the turquoise and sapphire coastline.

The 76-room boutique property is part of Hilton’s LXR Hotels & Resorts group, which means you can use Hilton Honors points to book it for an outdoor shower and vacation to remember, potentially entirely on the house.

Tryall Club

One of the most iconic sounds of Jamaica come evening time is the metallic chirping song of the island’s ubiquitous tree frogs. And when you can hear them with a gentle and warm shower falling on your back, it’s transporting travel at its best.

The villas for rent at the Tryall Club on Jamaica’s north coast, not far from Montego Bay, have several decadent outdoor shower options, but Bella Vista’s might be our favorite of the bunch for its clean lines, huge expanse and direct access to the villa’s outdoor patio, where you air dry in the ocean breezes.

Little Mombo Camp

Picking a favorite outdoor shower from those on offer at the endless luxury safari camps across Africa is a challenge, to say the least – would you prefer to towel off with views of elephants gathering at a waterhole or are grazing hippos more your speed?

We love the copper and brass fittings and rustic-chic look of the outdoor showers at Little Mombo Camp in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Part of the Wilderness Safaris collection, it’s home to just nine spacious tents where the elevated views from both your room and your outdoor bathing bastion overlook a floodplain teeming with wildlife that might include lions, leopards and wild dogs, depending on the day.
