Does a faucet in your kitchen or bathroom leak?

April 2020 – It is springtime, this year also the time we spend in isolation. It is usually used for work and repairs in your home. It does not matter if you are a DIY master or an absolute beginner, when spring fever will kick in, you will probably want to roll up your sleeves and make your home as nice and comfortable as possible. The question is, where to start?

One of the common things we may eventually encounter in maintenance is sealing a leaking tap or replacing an old worn out tap with a new one. In any case, you will need a silicone sealant for repair or installation. Silicone sealants are rubbery mass found on the edge of the sink. We usually use them in the bathroom and in the kitchen, as well as for glass structures and windows. They are very versatile sealants that we can use in many different ways, and are especially distinguished on glass and metals. The advantages of silicone sealants are durable elasticity, excellent adhesion to various materials, very good UV resistance and water resistance. They are easy to use and look good.

How to choose the right silicone sealants for the bathroom and the kitchen A silicone sealant is one of the best options to use in bathrooms and kitchens. Because we always work with mould-causing water in these rooms, in order to prevent mould and fungi formation, special chemicals are added to the production of silicone sealants. A silicone sealant with special additives to prevent mould and fungus formation is commonly called a sanitary sealant.

However, do not use a regular silicone sealant in your bathroom and kitchen – mould could form in a very short time. Be sure to buy a silicone sealant that works against mould and fungi, such as silicone for your bathroom and kitchen Neostik SILIKON SANITAR. Because it is impermeable to water, we use it to seal joints which need to be resistant to mould and fungi in humid environments. It has good adhesion to many surfaces, especially to materials such as glass, ceramics, clinker, aluminium, enamel, profiled glass (copelit), glazed surfaces and many plastics (except PP, PE, PTFE). It cures room temperature with the help of air humidity and forms a permanently elastic, rubber-like mass with excellent properties: it is extremely resistant to weathering, chemicals, UV rays, mould and fungi and elevated temperatures up to 180 °C.

However, the action of silicone sealants against mould and fungi is not a substitute for regular cleaning of bathrooms and humid or wet joints. Anti-mould sanitary properties have their own life span. In general, the less maintained the bathroom is, the shorter the life of the fungicide agent in the silicone sealant will be. No sealant will remain mould-free in an environment we do not maintain.

Here are some tips for preventing mould formation:

  • Keep your bathroom well ventilated.
  • After showering, allow hot air and steam to escape from the bathroom.
  • Do not allow water or soap to remain on the sealant.
  • Clean the sealant regularly.
  • In areas that are always damp or wet, mould will usually appear. Keep all these surfaces dry.

We recommend using Neostik SILIKON SANITAR for bigger repairs (fitting taps, sanitary ceramics, shower cabins), and Neostik SILIKON SANITAR PLUS in convenient, 60 ml packaging for smaller repairs. Both mould and fungus silicone sealants are available in a transparent and white colour to match your interior.

Silicone sealant Neostik SILIKON SANITAR is also suitable for use in spaces where mould formation could occur.
