Tyler Municipal Rose Garden

Many visitors to Texas have heard stories about this popular destinaiton, and want to know “Where is the Tyler Rose Garden?”

Established in 1952, the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden is the nation’s largest municipal rose garden, spanning 14 acres. It is located on Rose Park Drive, just off Front Street west of downtown Tyler.

The gardens include over 38,000 rose bushes and over 600 different varieties, as well as reflecting pools, walkways and fountains. It was listed in 2011 in Livability.com’s top 10 most inspiring gardens in the USA.

The gardens are a popular destination for both local residents and for visitors, and offer a diversity of photographic opportunities.

They are the location for numerous wedding photo shoots, school group photos, parties, reunions and professional photography as well.

It is one of 24 All American Rose Selection (AARS) test gardens in the country, and also includes a unique Idea Garden created and maintained by the Smith County Master Gardeners.

Another popular area is the 1-acre Heritage Rose and Sensory Garden, which has antique rose varieties dating to 1867. Situated in the in the southwest corner of the Garden, it contains over 30 varieties of 19th century garden roses.

Other areas frequented by Garden visitors are the Vance Burks Memorial Camellia Garden, the Edna Lankart Daylily Collection and the Meditation Garden near the reflection pools.

In 2012, a new feature was added to the Rose Garden: Spring bulbs! More than 8,000 bulbs were planted for bloom during the spring of 2012. More than 10,000 square feet of beds containing narcissus (daffodils), crocus, hyacinths, tulips, Dutch iris, allium, crinum, spider lilies and caladiums have been planted.

Actual construction of the garden began in 1938 as a part of the federal Work Projects Administration (WPA) under the administration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

In March 2011 the City of Tyler and the Texas Rose Festival Association entered into an agreement to develop a master plan to further enhance the Tyler Rose Garden.

In 2019, the Tyler Rose Garden was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Texas Rose Festival, Rose Parade, and Rose Museum

Located adjacent to the Rose Garden is the Tyler Rose Museum, which showcases and documents the history of the annual Texas Rose Festival. Nearby is the new W.T. Brookshire Conference Center.

The 90th Texas Rose Festival will be held in Tyler on October 19-22, 2023 in Tyler.

The 2023 Festival Queen and theme were announced on January 5, 2023 at the Festival’s Winter Gala at the Willow Brook Country Club. Laura Elaine Bryan will be the 90th Rose Queen, and this year’s theme will be “The Story of Film”.

The Elegance and Color of Roses

This YouTube video lasts only a couple minutes, and has some easy-listening music. So turn up your volume, and enjoy some beautiful roses!

A Garden for Pollinators and People

Pollinators like butterflies, birds, hummingbirds, bees, moths, bats, ants, beetles, and small mammals pollinate plants and are responsible for helping plants reproduce. Pollinating creatures travel from plant to plant carrying pollen on their bodies via a process that allows the transfer of genetic material critical to the reproductive system of most flowering plants.

This video showcases common pollinators found around the home, and some of the many flowers they help reproduce.

It runs about 6 minutes, so sit back and enjoy … and turn up your volume for some easy-listening music!

Like all YouTube videos, you can click to run it full screen, and mute the music if you like.
