The worktop height may vary a bit, mostly depending on the thickness of the worktop, the type of kitchen cabinet, and the overall kitchen style you choose in your case. One of the easiest ways to work out a suitable kitchen worktop height is to match it closely with the ball of your wrist bone. Simply stand upright with your hands by your side, and take the measurements so that the ball of your wrist sits in-line with the surface of the worktop. This way you can ensure the worktop will provide a comfortable height for carrying out common kitchen tasks like chopping and preparing meals.
Not only do worktops come in a range of standard sizes, they can also be cut to size in order to suit your needs. But while you’re at it, keep in mind the height of some kitchen appliances that are supposed to slot under the worktop. And in case you wish to future-proof your kitchen, you may also consider height-adjustable worktops. However, it’s always best to take the expert advice of your kitchen planner and fitter in this regard.
The average kitchen worktop depth typically lies between 600mm (60cm) and 650mm (65cm). It mostly varies depending on the size of the base cabinets. Having said this, having a depth of around 650mm can give you a lot more prep space.
Having a 20-30mm worktop overhang at the front of the base cabinets is considered the norm. In some kitchen designs, a smaller overhang of 5-10mm is preferred, for creating a sleek, modern look.
The kitchen worktop thickness varies depending on the kitchen worktop material you choose for your project. Below are some common kitchen worktop materials and their standard thickness:
Acrylic – between 20mm and 100mm
Granite – 30mm, 40mm
Quartz – 12mm, 20mm, 30mm

Laminate – 40mm
Timber – 40mm
Considering that a standard worktop is around 60cm deep, a working island should have a depth of minimum 60cm. However, you may need an additional 30-60cm to accommodate a storage space, depending on the overall dimensions of your kitchen space.
The distance between the worktop and the underside of the wall units will vary depending on the height of the wall unit and the thickness of the worktop.
If you follow the best practices for designing your kitchen, you should allow for at least 400mm (40cm) clearance between the worktop surface and the bottom of the wall units, leaving enough space on the worktop for keeping small appliances.
You may also want to consider the distance required between your hob and the overhead extractor. In the case of induction or electric hobs, a distance of 55cm is advisable, while it’s around 65cm in the case of gas.
There are a number of variables that come into the picture once you start figuring out an appropriate set of dimensions for your ideal kitchen worktop. The standard ranges for the worktop height and depth are just figures for you to consider when designing your kitchen space, since these cater to the needs of most households.
Needless to say, you will need to plan the space keeping in mind the size and location of all your important kitchen appliances and accessories, in order to enable frequent kitchen tasks to be completed efficiently. Ultimately, it’s more about personal comfort and ergonomics than anything else.If you are in the process of designing a new kitchen, whether from scratch or adapting an existing design to better suit your needs, and would like to learn more about all the different types of kitchen worktops available along with their sizes, feel free to reach out to our team of expert kitchen design consultants in North London!
