How to Choose the Right Rug Size for a Dining Table

Selecting the best rug size for a dining table is a necessary step in creating a room that is both suitable and elegant. The right size rug under your dining table is also a way to create a more functional space. With a few simple steps, you will have mastered the ideas that you need to know for measuring the right size rug for your dining table.

Rug Size for Dining Table: Calculating the Best Size

  1. The best dining room rug size needs to be at least 18-24” longer than all sides of your dining table. This will keep all four chair legs on the rug and allow you to move them without catching the legs on the rug each time you move the chair in and out. Make sure to account for the dining table rug size with any leaf extensions that you use on a regular basis.
  2. To determine the best rug size for your individual table, measure the length and width of your table. Next, round each measurement to the nearest foot. Take into account any table extensions you use on a regular basis. Add 3-4 feet to each measurement. Typical dining room rug measurements are around 8×10 and 9×12. Choose a rug size that is at least 1 foot away from the walls on each side.
  3. To determine the correct rug shape, look at the shape of your table. If you have a round table, use a round dining room rug or a square rug. For a rectangular table, use a rectangular rug. For an oval table, a rectangular rug works best.
  4. Make sure that whatever size rug you choose for your dining table, leave at least 1-2 feet of space between the sides of the dining room walls and the rug.

Tips for Choosing the Right Dining Room Rug

Rugs in the dining room are a prominent feature in your home’s design and they get more than your average amount of wear. It is important to consider both design and practical concerns when considering a rug for your dining room.

Oversize Rather Than Undersize

Calculate the measurement for your dining room rug. Consider going with the larger size if your measurements fall between a larger and a smaller size. A generous sized rug will make your room look more impressive and elegant. A too small rug will make your dining experience less functional if the rug catches on the chairs.

Longevity

An area rug for a dining table has both chairs legs and feet moving upon it on a constant basis. Choose a rug made from material that will last. Some of the most long lasting types of rugs are polypropylene, nylon, sisal, polyester, seagrass, and wool.

Easy to Clean

Choose a rug that is easy to clean. Flatweave rugs and rugs with a short pile work well in dining room areas because they don’t trap food. Natural fiber rugs like wool are easier to clean and have better longevity. Other good options for dining room rugs are indoor/outdoor rugs that manufacturers make easy to clean and long-lasting.

Dark Colored Rug

Dining room rugs sustain wear and spillage from food and drinks. Dark colored rugs will hide wear and stains better than light rugs.

Practice Makes Perfect

Determine your measurements for the rug size for your dining table. After you do this, create an outline in painter’s tape to see if you like the way the size looks with your table.
