HOMEMADE LIQUID LAUNDRY DETERGENT RECIPE

Published by

Are you looking for ways to save money? Well, let me share one DIY secret of mine: my homemade liquid laundry detergent recipe!

For me, saving money is all about finding a little extra here and a little extra there. It all adds up, right?

A couple of things I love about this homemade liquid laundry detergent is that it is cheap and it works. Back when all five of my kids were at home I used it! And it kept our clothes nicely clean. You will make an initial investment in the supplies (it is a small investment) but you can use them over and over again to make more batches of soap.

Also, this recipe can be multiplied to make as much as you want at one time. When my five kids were home I made a lot more at a time than I do now with just Aubry and myself.

Now, I have a really nice washer and dryer and it is only 2 years old, and I use this detergent in it. You will have to make this choice for yourself and decide on what feels right for you. Keep in mind that you can regularly add vinegar to your cycles to clean things out.

Gather your supplies:

  • ZOTE Soap Flakes
  • Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
  • Borax Laundry Booster
  • Water
  • A sturdy container with a lid to store your detergent. It should be about twice the size of the amount you are making.

You can either watch the video below or scroll down and I will walk you through how to make the homemade liquid laundry detergent step-by-step. Download the step-by-step PDF tutorial here.

Step One: Measure two cups of water and one cup of soap flakes into a saucepan and heat over medium heat until flakes dissolve completely. This will take about 5 minutes.

Step Two: Once the flakes are dissolved, add two TB each of washing soda and Borax to the pan. This will thicken quickly. Stir well.

Step Three: Use a funnel to pour the thickened mixture into your container. Add 6 more cups of water and shake well. Let this sit overnight.

Step Four: This mixture will turn into a gel overnight, and prior to each use, you will need to give it a good shake to make it pourable. Use the same amount that you normally use for a wash load.

There you have it! Pretty simple, don’t you think?

I would love to know if you try this!
