Tip from FT of Alliance:
I put one wooden match, head down, in my houseplants every month. It seems to keep the pests away. Do not do this to African violet plants.

TO W of NY:
Your seeds came back in your SASE. Not sure why … it said the address you had on the envelope was not correct? So please, just send me your address where you want seeds sent and I will try again.
To Kyle in Cleveland … from ER of Sugarcreek:
For ants mix 20 mule-team borax and white sugar; same amount of each – it kills them.
Another helper writes from Millersburg:
Farmer John:
I noticed the question about ants and how to eliminate without poisons or toxic chemicals. We’ve had much success with using a mixture of boric acid and powdered sugar, or can use borax (40 Mule Team). We mix boric acid, one part, and powdered sugar, three parts, or borax, two parts, and powdered sugar, one part. This has worked excellently for us to control ants, all kinds, carpenter ants to little red ants.
If you mix the boric acid with equal parts of sugar it kills the ants more quickly. But if you mix one part to three parts sugar the ants will carry it back to their nests killing many of those too. Pure boric acid with no sugar has been very effective to completely eliminate roaches from our house (we had a serious infestation before we knew what a roach was) thousands! We just put from 1/8 to a 1/4 cup in their hideaways like the backs of the closets, the fixture area of both tubs, we even took off the door casings in our basement and put the boric acid behind the casings, and within 12 weeks we were roach free and have not had any since (the boric acid is still there) and that was 15 years ago.

JS also sent us some of the health benefits of using from one-three ounces coconut oil daily … it is organic and may help the following (according to medical research and clinical observation. Some of these you may find reported in the book The Healing Miracles of Coconut Oil by Bruce Fife, ND; check your libraries for the book and other research on this oil.
A few of the ways it may help caught my eye like: 1) may help protect body from some cancers; 2) may kill viruses that cause mono, flu, hepatitis C, certain types of herpes, fungus and yeast infections; 3) may slow aging and dry skin as they also say 100 percent virgin olive oil does; 4) may chase off or kill other parasites such as lice, tapeworms, fleas, etc.,

(Thank you JS. Basically it is good for us in many ways, like drinking some cranberry or grape juice every day; using some 100 percent virgin olive oil; using some apple cider vinegar daily; having a few ounces of lemonade a day; drinking green tea; and eating as much organic food as possible … if we take care of what we put into our body, exercise and get enough sleep, avoid stress, we will feel better. Avoid more sickness or not get sick as badly, look and feel younger, and be more limber as we get older. I guess it is like a car or horse, take good care of it and it will run better and last a long time. Have a great day and please send us some more good tips … FJ)
Can you help?
Does anyone have a good tuna salad recipe to spread on bread or crackers? I thank anyone who can help me.
M of Caldwell
Bed bugs a problem in your area? A very close friend told me this week that if you put clothes in your dryer for 20 minutes, or put furniture in a dry area where temperature is below freezing for several days before putting in your home, that this will kill bed bugs. Another reader from Rising Sun said they spray and seal anything they get in plastic bags for 48 hours to kill and to see if any bed bugs appear. Of course, examine the item very closely first before even buying.
If you have any tips, please share and send to us at Farmer John, P.O. Box 234, Groveport 43125.
Dear Farmer John:
Where do viruses that tomatoes get come from? It seems every year whether I move plants to a new area or not, some get a virus. What am I doing wrong? We always read and enjoy your column.
D of Fostoria
Dear D:
Viruses can come from flowers, the place where you buy your plants, from weeds, from the smoke of someone smoking a cigar or cigarette, from pests, and even from clothes that have been around infected plants or smokers. So it is or can be a problem. The idea is get healthy plants, wear clean clothes in garden, keep weeds down and smokers away, plant at least a third more plants than you think you need for the harvest you want.
Just Cookies from Mary A. of New Riegel:
My grandmother always made these cookies and when anyone would ask what they were called she always said “they’re just cookies.” Years later when she passed we found the cookie recipe in her recipe box, and at the top there was written “Just Cookies.” I will always treasure that oil spotted smeared recipe and want to share it with you and your readers.

Dear Farmer John:
What can I use to kill the grass in my gravel driveway? It is too close to the well (20 feet) to use chemicals. Thanks for your help.
S from Senecaville.
Dear S:
You must be careful you don’t get burned, but boiling water will do the job, as will grubbing out the grass that is persistent.
Dear Farmer John:
I recently moved into the Millersburg area. Enjoy receiving your column in our local paper. Sure would like help with a problem I am having. Everything I fry sticks in my iron skillet. Wonder if anyone knows how I can treat this problem. Any ideas how to help me? Sure hope so!
L of Millersburg
Dear L:
If any readers have an idea too, please write me. If it is a heavy good iron skillet, I would make a hot wood fire and when you have a bed of red ashes, put your iron skillet in it. This will burn off all old buildup. Then let cool, grease it by rubbing it with lard, and then cook in it. But remember, it is not like a treated skillet. You need oil and must watch when you are frying something. Most find cooking slower works best.
