Ever since I got the recipe from a friend at work a few years ago (thank you, Katie!), my battles with soap scum are a thing of the past. I barely even have to scrub anymore! And it’s made with two super-inexpensive ingredients that you probably already have on hand.

Do You Dread Cleaning Your Shower or Tub?
Cleaning has never been my favorite task — and the shower or tub is one of the areas I’ve always dreaded the most.
For one thing, they can be small, awkward spaces to get into — sometimes I feel like a contortionist trying to scrub the corners of our showers.
For another, the soap scum buildup is just so. hard. to. remove.
I would dread spending what seemed like forever scrubbing away at the soap scum buildup only to feel like it never really got clean enough. So I would put it off and procrastinate, which just let the soap scum build up even more.
Sometimes it felt like a losing battle.

The BEST Homemade Shower and Tub Cleaner and Soap Scum Remover
This amazing DIY recipe requires just two ingredients:
white vinegar + Dawn dish soap
Yup, that’s it!
I know it sounds ridiculous to think that you could get better results with such simple ingredients than with expensive, complicated store-bought products. But it’s true!

I’ve used both conventional and natural products to clean my bathrooms over the years and I’ve NEVER used anything that dissolves soap scum like this homemade recipe.
It’s fantastic for cleaning the soap scum from your shower walls, the sides and bottom of your tub, and even glass shower doors!
(Note of Caution: Do NOT, however, use this mixture on natural stones like marble or granite – the vinegar can etch and damage the finish. See the recipe below for an alternative to use on these types of stone.)
How to Make It
Simply mix equal amounts of white vinegar and Dawn dish soap in a glass spray bottle, give it a good shake, and you’re done!
Optionally, you can heat the vinegar in the microwave or on the stove until it’s warm before adding it to the dish soap. But I’ve had great results simply adding the two ingredients at room temperature and shaking them well before each use.
Make sure you use a glass spray bottle with a good-quality sprayer because the mixture is both powerful (thanks to the vinegar) and thick (thanks to the Dawn.) I’ve had great success with these glass spray bottles I got inexpensively on Amazon:

And you could easily add on some silicon sleeves to the bottoms to protect them from bumps and breaks. They come in lots of colors, including these options:
How to Use This Homemade Soap Scum Remover
Once your two ingredients are well-combined, you’re ready to tackle your soap scummy-surface.
Give your spray bottle a good shake and then spray the mixture onto your shower or tub.Let it sit for 10-30 minutes and then wipe away with a cleaning sponge (<<this one works really well) or a microfiber cloth (<< I’ve been using these for years and they’re really affordable!.) Finish by rinsing with fresh water, using either a handheld shower head or a large cup.

Now, if you’ve got some scum accumulated, it may still take you a bit of scrubbing to remove it all at first. But once you have a clean surface, you shouldn’t need to scrub again as long as you keep up with using the spray regularly.

What About the Vinegar Smell?

The odor is admittedly pretty strong at first, but it fades fairly quickly.
I’m so happy to be using a cleaner that is inexpensive, relatively non-toxic (more about that below) and yet still super-effective that I’m perfectly willing to endure a little vinegar smell while I’m cleaning. It bothers me a lot less than the cleaning products I used to buy that were filled with chemicals that used to make me short of breath.
I always make sure to run the bathroom exhaust while I’m cleaning the bathroom — regardless of which products I’m using — and you could crack open a window if you have one in your bathroom if the smell bothers you.
If you REALLY can’t get used to the vinegar smell, you could try using inexpensive vodka in place of the vinegar (see the recipe note above). I haven’t tried it personally, but if you do, let me know in the comments below how effective it is for you.
How Natural Is It?
As I mentioned when I shared the Easy Homemade Granite Cleaner I love to use, I am all about finding homemade cleaning recipes that help me save money and avoid nasty chemicals in my home.
So I will note here that Dawn dish soap doesn’t get the highest rating in the world from the Environmental Working Group.
Personally, I’m okay with using it in this recipe because (1) I don’t use it very often, only when soap scum actually accumulates in my shower or tub; and (2) the alternative I would normally use in place of the Dawn (castile soap) isn’t effective when mixed with vinegar.
But you can make your own judgment about whether or not it has a place in your natural cleaning arsenal. 🙂

It’s Never Been Easier to Clean Your Shower!
Cleaning bathrooms has always been one of my least favorite chores.
