Sugar may not be good for you, but when it comes to summertime exfoliating it’s a must—especially for your lips. Have you ever wondered how to get soft lips? Starting a lip care regime will keep your pout fresh and kissable as you enter the cooler months, and the good news is that it’s as easy (and sweet) as pie to do. Use your favorite lip products after you exfoliate for the perfect lip. These DIY lip scrub recipes are perfect for treating chapped lips or proactively adding moisture.
- Brown Sugar = Exfoliator
- Organic Honey = Natural Healing Properties (Antiseptic)
- Organic Coconut Oil = Nourishing/Moisturizing
By exfoliating with a natural scrub, you’ll slough off that top layer of skin often left dry from the sun, exposing a new soft lip that allows for better penetration of hydrating products (like lip balm) and makes your favorite liquid lipsticks go on smoother and last longer. How do you exfoliate? If you know how to exfoliate your face, then exfoliating your lips is easy. Simply take your homemade lip scrub and gently apply to dry lips. Softly massage your DIY sugar scrub on your lips and then remove with lukewarm water.

Homemade Natural Lip Scrub
Materials / Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon of organic coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon of organic honey
- Small glass container with lid (try an old pot of lip gloss or baby food jar)
- Bowl & spoon to mix ingredients
Step 1: Making The Base
Coconut oil’s consistency changes depending on the temperature—it liquefies when warmed and tends to separate and solidify at room temperature. Scoop out and use the solid portion of the coconut oil.
Is coconut oil good for your lips? Coconut oil is a moisturizing oil ideal for your skin and lips. Coconut oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties as well as large quantities of hydrating vitamins including vitamin E and vitamin K. Coconut oil is the most moisturizing oil and your best choice for a DIY sugar scrub that moisturizes chapped lips.
Alternatively, you can substitute coconut oil for olive oil or almond oil. Olive oil is nutrient-dense oil with antioxidant properties including vitamin E as well as vitamins A, D, and K. Almond oil is another nutrient-dense oil with vitamin E that also comes with zinc and potassium. Almond oil is lighter compared to coconut oil and olive oil. If you use almond oil as your base, you may need to reapply your lip scrub to banish dry lips.
In your bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of coconut oil with 1 tablespoon of honey. Mix until you are left with a rich, thick, and SMOOTH consistency.

Bonus: Coconut oil contains fatty acids and antioxidants that nourish your skin, while honey contains natural healing properties.
Step 2: Creating The Sugar Scrub
Add two firmly packed tablespoons of brown sugar to your base and mix until it is completely integrated and coated, forming a paste. We recommend brown sugar over white sugar because it is a softer exfoliant. Adjust the sugar-to-base ratio to achieve your desired scrub consistency. If you prefer a really silky scrub, add 1 teaspoon of Honest Body Oil to the mix. This will smooth out the scrub and make it extra moisturizing.
Bonus: Brown sugar is a great natural exfoliant and is much gentler than some of nature’s other exfoliants, like sea salt. Pairing brown sugar with a gentle oil emollient makes the best scrub recipe.
Step 3: Storing Your Natural Lip Scrub
Transfer your delicious lip scrub into your glass container with lid. Make sure to label the jar and add the date so you can keep track of how long you’ve had it. And consider making it in small batches because homemade cosmetics lack the preservatives and don’t last as long. This particular lip scrub recipe should last for approximately two weeks if you keep it refrigerated.
Step 4: Using the Lip Scrub
Before each use, let the scrub sit out and adjust to room temperature to soften up before applying to your pout. Using a generous amount, apply the scrub to your lips in a circular motion. Let it sit for 1-2 minutes and then remove with a warm washcloth. Apply Honest Organic Tinted Lip Balm or your favorite moisturizing lip treatment after each use to maximize the results of your freshly scrubbed lips. Avoid toxic chemicals by using a natural lip balm instead of petroleum jelly.
What does exfoliating do? Exfoliating your lips removes dry skin and hydrates your lips making them soft. Regular exfoliation with a DIY lip scrub helps keep lips soft. Makeup also applies more easily to silky smooth lips. Using a homemade lip scrub will help your lipstick, gloss, and lip pencil looks last longer. Avoid chapped lips and enhance your makeup looks by making lip exfoliation a regular part of your beauty routine. Then lock in the benefits of your homemade lip scrub by applying a hydrating shea butter lip balm, or top it off with our coconut oil-infused lip gloss for added shine.
