Enjoy that can of Coke you’re drinking, because your next one might not taste the same. Oh yes. Both Coke and Pepsi are changing their recipes. Why? Well…apparently it involves a law about labels, cancer warnings and these crazy things called carcinogens.

Here we ask all the important (and not so important) questions you may have about this topic such as: why are the ingredients being changed? Can Pepsi really rot your teeth? And, most importantly of all, how is Coke able to clean a dirty coin?
You are watching: Why are they changing the recipes of Coke and Pepsi?
Okay, what’s going on. Why are people talking about Coke and Pepsi changing their recipes?
Basically Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have to adjust their recipes across the United States of America so they don’t have to label their products with a very unattractive cancer warning.
Wait a minute – cancer warning?
Apparently it’s all to do with the formula of their caramel colouring which contains an additive known as 4-methylimidazole (4-MI or 4-MEI). Don’t let its delicious name fool you. For years, this additive has been targeted by consumer groups who claim that the chemical can cause cancer if it is ingested in large amounts.
WHAT?!?!?!!

The state of California recently added 4-MI to its list of carcinogens after high levels of the chemical apparently caused tumours to form in animals. But you can relax for the time being as studies so far suggest that the chemical does not have the same effect on humans.
Are you sure?
Well, according to Coca-Cola the company has made the decision to change the recipe of its caramel colouring but this is solely just to meet the requirement of the new law. However, the company has argued that allegations that the ingredient can cause cancer in humans were just false.
It also says that the caramel colouring used in all of their recipes has been, is and always will be safe.
Right. It’s still a bit unsettling though…
Agreed. However, according to a spokesperson from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in America, a person would have to drink over a thousand cans of Coke a day to reach the doses administered in the scientific studies that link the chemical to cancer in rodents.
So unless you’re a total Coke junkie, you should be okay for now.

That’s great! Will the change in recipe affect how my beverage tastes?
Nope! The manufacturers are smart and they know that the reason why you buy their drinks is because you love the taste. They have said that they will make the change, but that consumers will not be able to tell the difference between one can of Coke that contains the chemical and one can of Coke which doesn’t.
What is the recipe for Coke anyway?
Ah now, don’t you know that’s a closely guarded secret? Some people say that the official recipe is hidden away in a vault in Atlanta that’s guarded 24 hours a day. It’s a bit much for a piece of paper, like, but there you go…
Cool. Another thing – how is Coke able to clean a dirty coin?
Coke is acidic on the pH scale. A dirty coin usually contains a build-up of calcium and zinc which causes it to lose its shine. By putting the coin into a bowl of Coke, the acid in the Coke will eat away at the build-up, thus making it all shiny and clean again. Simple science, really.
So does Coke have the same effect on my insides as it does on a dirty coin?
What do you think I am? A scientist? We’ll harbour a guess and say that while it may not ‘shine’ your insides up real good, there’s no doubt you’ll drink healthier drinks every day. But we’ll still drink it anyway because it tastes awesome. As they might say in Atlanta.
