Stardew Valley is an exciting and diverse game, and it can be hard to keep up with everything you need to do and everything you need to manage! I, for one, have been guilty of neglecting to protect my farm and regretting it when a storm strikes and does damage to valuable Crops and expensive Trees! That is the key importance of Lightning Rods!
What Are Lightning Rods?
Lightning Rods are objects which you can craft and can be placed around your farm in order to store energy from Storms and create Battery Packs.

Why Are Lightning Rods Important?
One of the main appeals of placing Lightning Rods on your farm is to protect them from damage during a storm. When a storm occurs on your farm, there is a chance of a Lightning strike occurring which will cause lightning damage to Crops as well as Trees on your farm.
Storms only happen on rainy days, but when they do, there is a chance for a Lightning strike every ten minutes, so you can understand why some players prioritize placing multiple Lightning Rods on your farm. Placing these Lightning Rods means that storms can be intercepted and absorb lightning damage that would otherwise occur on your farm, which then creates Battery Packs.
Battery Packs
Lightning Rods store storm energy, which they then process and turn into Battery Packs. In order to create Battery Packs, Lightning Rod should be placed around your farm.
You will be able to tell when the items are ready to collect as the Lightning Rods will start to move and pulsate to indicate that there are items available to collect. This will occur the day after the Lightning Rod has successfully stored energy from a storm, although it is important to note that this is not always guaranteed.
Battery Packs can be used to create;
A Farm Computer

Where Should I Place Lightning Rods?
Lightning Rods can be placed in any location as the location does not influence the success of the Lightning Rod. It is important to note, however, that you should not place the Lightning Rod outside of your farm as although it technically can be placed here, it will not be able to collect any energy from storms here.
Once you place Lightning Rods around your farm, they will create Battery Packs by storing energy that is present during a storm. If you are eager to create Battery Packs, you could create and place multiple Lightning Rods all around your farm, as each Rod can only store or collect energy from one storm at a time until it is collected.

It is also important to note that Lightning Rods do not work or collect energy during Winter. Although you do not need to collect your Lightning Rods in Winter, it is unnecessary to craft and place these during Winter as they will not work effectively until Spring.
If you have free-roaming animals which you want to graze on the grass that grows wildly around your farm, you should not place Lightning Rods among the grass as this will prevent your animals from grazing on the grass.
How Can I Get Lightning Rods?
There are multiple ways in which you can gain a Lightning Rod, starting with crafting. If you want to craft a Lightning Rod, all you require is one Iron Bar, one Refined Quartz Bar, and five Bat Wings. In order to craft the Lightning Rod, you also need to reach foraging level six to receive the Blueprint.
You can get Refined Quartz by mining, collecting trash to recycle or smelting normal quartz and Fire Quartz. You can get an Iron Bar by smelting Iron Ore. Then you can get one bat wing for every bat that you take down in the mines.
Lightning Rods can also be gifted to you as a reward for progressing within the Community Centre. When you complete the 25,000g bundle in the Vault, you will be gifted one Lightning Rod. To complete this bundle, you simply need to save and then deposit 25,000g into the Vault.
How Many Lightning Rods Should I Place on my Farm?
How many Lightning Rods you create really depends on how eager you are to collect energy and create Battery Packs, but you can collect multiple rods on your farm to make the most out of every storm. It also means you must regularly collect energy from the Lightning Rods as each Lightning Rod is only functional when it is not currently storing energy.
If a Lightning Rod has the energy it has gathered from a storm that has not been collected, it is no longer capable of storing energy.
If the Lightning Rods on your farm currently are empty, then they will definitely collect any energy available during a storm; however, if half of your Lightning Rods are already storing energy, the chance of more energy being stored reduces to 75% chance.
