Castile soap is made just like other soaps with fats, water, and lye. It’s eco friendly because it’s made with plant oils.

Does Castile Soap Kill Bacteria?
Yes and no. Castile soap is not anti-bacterial in the sense that it kills germs on contact. However, it is a surfactant. A surfactant removes dirt and germs so they can be washed away.
Liquid Castile Soap
Castile soap is available in a liquid or a bar. I buy both for different reasons. If you do have a bar of castile soap, here’s how to make liquid castile soap from a bar.
Making it from a bar is perfect for cleaning, but I don’t care for it as much to use a homemade liquid hand soap or body wash because it separates.
However, if there’s no soap available, it will work just fine to kill germs!
I use Crafty Bubbles liquid castile soap. I really like the liquid castile soap from Mountain Rose Herbs too.
Dr. Bronner’s also makes several kinds of liquid castile soap in different scents. If you pick up with a scent, omit the essential oils.
I picked up some Equate brand soap from Walmart because I couldn’t wait for shipping. It does not mix well with water, so I don’t recommend using it.
Castile soap is a very gentle soap. True castile soap is made only from olive oil, but olive oil soap doesn’t lather well.
Liquid castile soap usually has coconut oil added for better lather. Depending on which kind you buy, you may not get much lather. That’s fine; you don’t need lather to get clean.
Distilled Water
I highly recommend using distilled water when you learn how to make hand soap with castile soap. Tap water can have bacteria and other germs in it. If you can’t get distilled water, then boil tap water and let it cool completely before you use it.
Carrier Oil
This isn’t drying, but you might still want to add a carrier oil. It’s optional, but it will help moisturize your skin.
I recommend using sweet almond oil or grape seed oil. Both are dry oils, so they won’t make your hands feel greasy or oily after you use your handmade soap recipe.
I don’t recommend using olive oil or a vegetable oil that you’d use for cooking. They are heavy oils, and they will leave your hands feeling oily.
I would skip using a carrier oil and use more lotion to keep my hands from getting dry.

Essential Oils
You can use your homemade liquid hand soap unscented or add a scent. You can try one of these fun essential oil blends that smell like candy if you have kids or want a light, fun scent. Or make a Thieves oil blend for a Thieves soap.
You can also use the Defender blend from Simply Earth or Shield from Mountain Rose Herbs.
Soap Container
I reuse soap containers for my homemade liquid hand soap when I can. You can reuse them several times after you learn how to make hand soap with castile soap before the pump finally breaks.
You can also get empty soap containers or buy a pump dispenser for a mason jar.
