Placing an enchanting table down and surrounding it by bookshelves in a square is how you power up and activate an enchanting table.
Make sure to have one block between the bookshelves and the table to get the maximum effect. The more bookshelves you place down the better your enchantments will be.
In total you can put down 15 bookshelves. With 15 bookshelves your enchantments will be at the maximum enchantment level of 30.
How to Enchant Items
Once you’ve put down bookshelves you can start enchanting things. You can start doing so before having all 15 bookshelves placed down, but without them you won’t be able to get the maximum level enchantments.
You can enchant the following items:
- Swords
- Fishing Rods
- Bows
- Crossbows
- Tridents
- Armor
- Books
Each item that you can enchant can have a different set of enchantments that are specific for it.
To enchant an item go into the enchanting table UI by clicking on it. You will see a slot where you can place your item and another slot for lapis lazuli.
Enchanting will cost you both lapis lazuli and your own player levels which you gain by killing mobs and performing certain actions.
When you place both the lapis and item into the enchanting table you will get a list of enchantments to appear on the left. You can hover over them to read them and then click to choose which enchantments you want.
Through the table an item can have a single enchantment placed on it.

Enchanting Alternatives
Just like we said, you can only apply a single enchantment to an item through the enchanting table. This means that you will have to find other ways to do multiple enchantments.
You also are able to combine different items with different enchantments and you can apply enchantments from enchanted books onto items.
All of this can be done through an anvil.
This is the way to get most out of enchanting.
Enchanting several books on the enchanting table and then transferring or combining the enchantments on an anvil is the best way to get the best enchantments for armor and any other items.
The anvil is the block where you will be repairing your enchanted items as well.
It’s very important to keep these items from wearing out and breaking, because it is very costly to make new ones and enchant them from scratch again.
