Ever since Internet sensation James Wright hit social media singing his praises for Patti LaBelle’s sweet potato pie, Wal-Mart hasn’t been able to keep it on the shelves.
Stores across the First Coast as well as around the country are consistently sold out. That’s why the pies, which retail for $3.48, have been selling on eBay for more than 10 times that amount.

So we wanted to know – what is it about this pie? Is it really that good? Would one bite lend itself to a spiritual experience where you couldn’t do anything but break out into song and dance?
We asked four co-workers at the North Campus of Florida State College at Jacksonville if they’d give it a try. And here’s what they had to say in their own words:
PRISONYA KELLAM, Cashier
“It’s OK. I taste cinnamon and maybe a little allspice. There’s something that is overpowering. I don’t know if it’s allspice. I don’t taste butter in it. And I make my pie with butter. To me, that pie is heavy. I don’t put condensed milk in mine. I use heavy whipping cream. I roast my sweet potatoes in the oven – a chef told me to roast them and I noticed the difference in the flavor. [But] for a store-bought pie, it’s good.

“Yes. it’s very, very good. The first thing I taste is the nutmeg or the cinnamon. It’s the best sweet potato pie I’ve had. I’m a pumpkin pie person. Normally I do not eat [sweet potato pie], but it is good. Sweet potato tends to be too sweet to me. This has a great flavor and consistency and the crust is very good, too. Probably wouldn’t serve it as my whole family loves pumpkin. If someone asked for sweet potato, I’d serve this.”
BETTY JIMMO, Instructor, Culinary Arts and Hospitality program
“Now, that is good. I do taste the sweet potato first. Then, it hits me with the sugar and probably nutmeg. I taste some sweetened condensed milk. That’s always good. I like the fact that it’s not grainy. There’s not a grain in it. I really enjoyed that pie. I’d buy it. I think it’s just a blend of how they prepared the sweet potato. I couldn’t make one that good. It’s one of the best pies – sweet potato or pumpkin – I’ve ever had.”
KIM PRATHER, Dietetic intern
“It’s a good pie. This one is delicate. It’s the spice. It’s not overwhelming. … I mean, it’s a good pie. It’s a great pie really. I don’t feel like the angels are singing or anything, but that doesn’t take anything away from it. I would buy that pie for sure.”
