You know I have been on a kick to rid the toxins in our home, for everyday items. This does not mean we are perfect. Just that we are aware and trying to switch up what we can. Slowly. It is a process. One item that we did use was a room refresher. I especially like to have them in bathrooms when guests come. Or even in Finn’s room after I changed his diaper. Room fresheners do contain small amounts of chemicals, long-term, low-dose exposure can cause the same health hazards as a higher dose! Very interesting and a good reason to make your own, simple DIY room spray!! All non-toxic, simple ingredients. Plus if you have kids, or heck, just doing this with a friend makes for the best little activity! Make and take room spray. Sign me up!

There are so many different combo’s of smells you can add to your room spray! Get creative. The main ingredients you need are essential oils, witch hazel and distilled water. A cute glass jar too! Lola and I came up with a couple of different combos for our home that we wanted to share with you. I did a lot of research and this is pretty much a basic recipe for room spray. I did read one that was almost 70 drops of essential oil. That is not necessary. The key is to start with less- give it a spray and maybe you will want a little more essential oils. Everyone accepts essential oils differently. But below is a good place to start!
Basic DIY Room Freshener Spray Recipe-
This is the basic recipe you can follow to create your own blend!
- 4 oz spray bottle (You could use 2 oz, just do less oils)
- 30 drops essential oil (aprox)
- 1 tablespoon witch hazel
- top the rest of your bottle with distilled water
- shake every time before using
If you are wondering why witch hazel? Witch hazel helps the oil and water combine and will help the scent linger for a longer period of time. You could also use vodka instead of witch hazel.
