How To Organize Your Kitchen Drawers
I love starting the new year with a fresh perspective and an organized home. I am starting in my kitchen. My kitchen drawers have gotten disorganized and messy during the holidays. Baking, cooking and entertaining have taken their toll and it’s time to clean out and organize the kitchen drawers!

I have 3 easy and effective steps to tackling this task. And I’m sharing my favorite kitchen organizing products with you. I’m taking all the guesswork out of getting your kitchen organized for the new year!
3 Steps to Organizing Kitchen Drawers
Ok, here they are! My 3 steps to achieving clean and totally organized kitchen drawers!
Step 1: Take Everything Out!
The first thing you need to do if you want to tackle organizing your kitchen is to empty all the drawers! Take everything out and make three piles. One for donating, one for keeping and one for garbage. Get rid of anything that you don’t use, is missing a part (hello Tupperware) and broken items. You will be surprised what you will find.
If you are short on space, this is a great time to really assess an item’s value and whether or not you want it taking up space in your kitchen! When I organized my kitchen drawers I found that I had six spatulas! I kept three and put the others in the donation pile.
I use this same mentally with my clothing as well. If I haven’t worn it in a year, I donate it. Of course there are exceptions to this, but it’s a great starting point.
Step 2: Have a Spot For Everything
Now that you have everything out of the drawers, put all of your items together by type. Then, figure out the best spot for things. For example, put all of your kitchen spatulas together and determine which drawer makes the most sense to keep them in.

Also, keep cooking utensils together and have them close by the stove and oven. Some of this is common sense, but you get the idea!
Step 3: Measure and Shop For Drawer Organizers
Once you have figured out what will go in each drawer, it’s time to get those drawers organized! Measure each drawer and make a list of what will go in that space.
My favorite place to shop for drawer organizing supplies is The Container Store. I found some amazing deep drawer organizers that came in so many different dimensions to fit the drawer perfectly.
Make sure you take the dimensions of each drawer you are organizing before heading to the store. You will want to know the width, length and also depth of each drawer.
I made a list of each drawer with the dimensions and what was going to be stored in the drawer. This made shopping more efficient and easy!
How To Organize Deep Kitchen Drawers
When we remodeled our kitchen, we opted to replace the lower cabinets with pull out drawers. I love having the deep drawers for storage, but they can easily get messy and out of control!
Here are some tips for how to organize deep kitchen drawers.
- Stack like items in your deep kitchen drawers. Casserole dishes and mixing bowls fit great in these large drawers. I like to stack dishes to save space, but only if they nest well together. And I never stack more than three. Otherwise, it becomes a leaning tower of Pisa!
- Use drawer dividers to keep your deep kitchen drawer organized. I love these bamboo dividers to make a large kitchen drawer more organized. By creating sections within the space, you delegate each area to have a purpose. I used these drawer dividers in the drawer that holds all of my kids cups and school lunch containers. The dividers also hold the items in place rather than falling all over the place when opening and closing the drawer!
- Stack items vertically. I found these great wooden organizers that allow me to store my muffin tins and cooling racks vertically. This saves so much space and is great for items like these that don’t stack very well.

One of my favorite finds was this drawer organizer that clips together and is perfect for storing kitchen towels. I couldn’t believe how much space I saved by storing my towels rolled up Marie Kondo-like rather than stacked like they were before! And they look so amazing. This drawer definitely sparks joy now!
Here are my other favorite finds. I took three separate trips to The Container Store and checked out every organizing tool they had! I returned a lot of things that ended up not working. After all of the trial and error, these are my favorite drawer organizing tools.
