We have established that the setting of “Big Sky” is based on a real place in Montana, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the first season was filmed there.
According to Atlas of Wonders, the only thing that was shot in Montana for the first season were the overhead shots of Helena, the capital of Montana where much of the story is set. As for the rest of the filming, they tell us that it was done in the Vancouver, Canada area, a major film hub where quite a lot of television productions take place.
That same article by Atlas of Wonders also tells us that the series makers filmed “Big Sky” partially in Fort Langley, a town outside of Vancouver. This isn’t the first time a show has been shot there – popular teen shows “Riverdale” and “Sabrina” were also shot there.
If you want to see Dewell and Hoyt Private Investigations, head down to Church Street in Fort Langley. Nearby, you can also see Cassie’s house and Merilee’s quilt store.

As for what doubled as the gorgeous Yellowstone region of Montana, the same article tells us that you can find that in the Squamish Valley. The beautiful rainforests of the Squamish Valley have been used for other movies like “The Revenant” as well as the “Twilight” series. There is so much to see in the Squamish Valley, so be sure to check out Explore Squamish to see some of the area’s amazing parks, wildlife preserves, and waterfalls that rival Yellowstone in their beauty.
The last season one location we’re going to cover today is the home where the kidnapper and truck driver Ronald lived. Atlas of Wonders tells us that this is the Thomas Joseph Brown house in Surrey, a heritage home that was built in the early 20th century. This same home has also been used in shows like “The X-Files” and “Supernatural.”
We’ve covered most of what you need to know for season one, but we aren’t completely done answering the question “Where is ‘Big Sky’ filmed?”
