What are Oils for in The Witcher 3
Oils grant strong offensive buffs to your swords when fighting against specific enemies. There are twelve basic Oils that can be upgraded to their Enhanced version, the Enhanced oils can then be upgraded to a Superior oil, making it a total of thirty-six oils in the game.
How much the attack damage increases will depend on what type of oil you use:
- Basic Oils grant 10%, 20 Charges.
- Enhanced Oils grant 25%, 40 Charges.
- Superior Oils grant 50%, 60 Charges.
Normally, only one Oil can be applied to each sword. Overlapping them will only cause the previous one to be removed. However, it’s possible to have up to three different oils applied at the same time on a sword when wearing at least three pieces of the Grandmaster Wolven Gear set.
It sounds like a good and convenient idea to have three oils active, but the game is structured in a way that it is not often you would need three oils and there are far more useful (and fun) set bonuses for wearing a witcher gear set. It’s a shame because the Grandmaster Wolf School has amazing visuals and individual stats for an all-rounder build gameplay.
Potions have no level requirements. However, to craft the higher tiers of potions, you will need to defeat powerful monsters to get the required ingredients.
Oil formulas can be obtained by finding them randomly when looting chests or other objects, buying them from merchants or herbalists, or during/after a quest of The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt.
Oils won’t last forever, the effect will be gone after a certain number of hits or 24 hours of in-game time. It’s possible to tell how many hits you have left by looking at the counter that appears under the Toxicity meter.
This only shows up when a sword with an active oil is drawn out. You can max out your Fixative ability to have oil effects last permanently.
Meditating will automatically refill your Oils, you must have available alcohol in your inventory for this.
If you are new to the game, I recommend you take a good look at The Witcher 3 DOs and DONTs guide for a great collection of beginner-friendly tips and recommendations to give you a good start.
How to get the ingredients and craft oils
To craft an oil, you first need to acquire its recipe (formula). Then you can open the Alchemy menu to determine what ingredients you need to gather to craft the oil.
Some oil formulas can be found randomly while others have a 100% guaranteed spot to get them from. In the next segment of the guide, I will show you the exact location of all confirmed spawns and/or purchasable oil formulas in the game.
Herbs, and Alchemy items you can obtain by exploring the world, looting chests or animals, and finding hidden treasures. You can also purchase many of the ingredients from herbalists and merchants.
Dog Tallow, Bear Fat and Alchemy Paste are the base ingredients for the basic, enhanced, and superior oils respectively. You’ll have enough of these if you just play the game. You can purchase them from multiple merchants as well.
To craft the Enhanced Oil, you need the Basic version of the same oil. To craft the Superior tier, you need the Enhanced version.
Superior Oils require rare items that can be acquired by defeating specific monsters, as well as one of the following special alchemy ingredients listed below:
Each one of these requires a few herbs and White Gull alcohol. White Gull is used in a lot of Alchemy formulas. You can learn where and how to get the ingredients to craft it from the guide to the Top Merchants in The Witcher 3. Visiting them as early as possible will allow you to stock up on all kinds of crafting ingredients.
