Published by
James marcus

These bentonite clay mask recipes are fantastic for acne-prone skin and can help promote healthy and glowing skin after a few treatments.

Indian healing clay is one of my best products for hair care. It helps with detoxifying the scalp, curl definition, and cleansing without stripping.

However, bentonite clay masks can also be a fantastic add-on to a skincare regimen targeted towards healthy and glowing skin.

What is Bentonite Clay?

Bentonite clay is a fine powder derived from volcanic ash aged over time.

It was initially discovered in Montmorillon, France but significant amounts can also be found in Fort Benton, Wyoming, USA.

Is Bentonite Clay Good for Skin?

For incredibly natural and toxic-free treatment for skin, bentonite clay is one of the best ingredients.

I have been experimenting with bentonite clay for cleansing and detoxifying my skin as well and developed the recipes I’m going to share in this article.

Can I Use Bentonite Clay Daily on My Skin?

Using a bentonite clay mask on your skin every day will be too much and might lead to counterproductive effects.

Use bentonite clay masks no more than 3 times a week on your face. They are formulated to only be used a few times a week.

Benefits of Bentonite Clay Masks for Skin

1. Controls Sebum Production

Bentonite clay controls sebum production on acne-prone skin, unclogs the skin, and minimizes the appearance of pores.

If your skin is purging because of something you ate or something else, bentonite clay masks can help regulate your skin.

The masks will draw out all the dirt, grime, impurities, and deep cleanse your pores.

2. Draws Out Toxins

Bentonite clay has a negative electrical charge, which bonds to toxins with a positive charge in the skin and draws them out.

3. Refreshes Skin

Bentonite clay treatments will improve skin texture and leave your skin refreshed with a healthy and beautiful glow.

4. Evens Out Skin Tone

Bentonite clay treatments improve the appearance of scars and smoothen out uneven skin tone.

5. Treats Skin Conditions

In addition to treating acne, bentonite clay masks can help with other skin conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis & eczema.

7. Dries Out Blackheads

If you have an uncontrollable desire to pop your blackheads, don’t. That will cause scarring.

However, using a suitable bentonite clay mask will help dry out the blackheads until they can be peeled off harmlessly during an exfoliating session.

8. Encourages Younger Looking Skin

Regular bentonite clay mask treatments tighten up mature skin and leave skin looking younger and firmer. A mini facelift without any surgery.

9. Suitable for All Skin Types

Bentonite clay is suitable for all skin types. It’s gentle and non-comedogenic. The chances of an allergic reaction to bentonite clay are slim.

I’ve covered the side effects of bentonite clay after the recipes below.

How to Use Bentonite Clay

There are many different types of clay and the type you use on the skin depends on your skin type as well as issues.

The recipes below will show a mix of recipes for dry skin, oily/acne-prone skin, mature skin, and sensitive skin.

4. Bentonite Clay Mask for Soothing Inflamed/Itchy Skin

Aloe vera gel has a soothing and calming effect on the skin plus it provides anti-inflammatory benefits as well.

Calendula oil also has a soothing effect on the skin and provides cell regeneration properties plus it’s an excellent moisturizer.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons of bentonite clay
  • 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel like Majestic Pure Aloe Vera Gel
  • 1 teaspoon calendula oil
  • Rosewater or distilled water
  • 3 drops tea tree essential oil or peppermint essential oil

Directions

  • Mix the bentonite clay with enough rosewater or distilled water to form a soft paste.
  • Add the aloe vera gel, calendula oil, and essential oil.
  • Mix again and apply in an even layer over your face, neck, and décolletage.
  • Leave on for 15 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water and apply a calming vitamin C serum or another moisturizer

5. Green Tea Bentonite Clay Mask for Mature Skin

Green tea is full of antioxidants and amino acids. These properties help improve skin quality and protect the skin from free radicals which cause aging.

For this recipe, I recommend using matcha green tea which is a more concentrated form of green tea and more effective.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 teaspoons of bentonite clay
  • 0.5 teaspoon of matcha green tea such as Jade Leaf Organic Matcha Green Tea, or PANATEA Certified Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 drops of rosehip seed oil

Directions

  • Mix the bentonite clay and green tea with enough distilled water to form a soft paste.
  • Add the apple cider vinegar and rosehip seed oil.
  • Mix again and apply in an even layer over your face, neck, and décolletage.
  • Leave on for 10 – 15 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water and apply a moisturizer.

Tips for Using Bentonite Clay Masks

  • Use these recipes no more than three times a week as overdoing it might have the opposite effect on your skin.
  • Mix in a small non-metallic bowl. Metal utensils render bentonite clay useless. This cosmetic mixing set is perfect for your DIY skin care needs.
  • Your acne might get worse before it gets better so don’t be alarmed if this happens. Continue with the treatment. Your skin should settle within a few weeks.
  • You can store leftover masks in a small glass jar like these ones but use them within 1 week. Fresh clay masks are always best.

Bentonite Clay Side Effects

Most people tolerate bentonite clay masks well. However, if your skin is too sensitive or the clay mask makes your face itch then make the consistency a bit thinner and leave it on for only 5 – 10 minutes.

Instead of rinsing with lukewarm water, you can hold your face over a bowl of hot water for a few minutes to steam off the mask then wipe it off with a damp towel.

Another method is to use the clay mask only once a week instead of a few times a week.

Additional tip – replace bentonite clay with white kaolin clay if you have especially sensitive skin. White kaolin clay is the mildest of all the clays.

Where to Buy Bentonite Clay?

Not all bentonite clay for sale is authentic. Some of them have been adulterated with unsafe ingredients or extracted improperly.

Below are my top 3 recommendations + 1 recommendation for white clay for sensitive skin. I have tried all these brands and they’re reliable:-
